Because February 11 – 15 is National Condom Week!
Valentine’s Day falls conveniently during Condom Week, so you might want to consider condom-themed gifts for your significant other. I can recommend condom paperweights and, if you find yourself in Thailand, the local Cabbages & Condoms Restaurant also sends the right message. I’m not a huge cabbage fan, but I love condoms and their “our food is guaranteed not to cause pregnancy” motto. The restaurant’s express focus is promoting condom use and HIV awareness, but like I said earlier, promoting condoms as pregnancy and STD prevention is my favorite.
A little bit less exotic in location but still totally awesome: students at the University of Southern Mississippi will be hosting a condom fashion show on Tuesday. All the designs showcased will be made at least mostly out of (expired) condoms. I can’t think of a demographic better served by sexual health awareness than college students, and I commend the Student Health Services at USM for putting on the show. Unfortunately, not all colleges are as receptive to the idea of condom distribution.
On a slightly more serious note, the American Social Health Association has a nice press release about Condom Week and some great online resources. Condoms hog a lot of the attention when it comes to safe sex, but not without good reason. They’re great! Have fun and be safe this week!
