A birth-control pill for men is now a reality, according to an international consortium of physicians who revealed their formula for “safe, effective and reversible” hormonal contraception for males.
The preparation includes progestin, a key ingredient found in women’s birth-control pills, and the male sex hormone testosterone. Progestin, a synthetic version of a hormone produced in a woman’s ovaries, helps suppress ovulation when used in an oral contraceptive. It appears to function in an analogous fashion for men, suppressing “both rate and extent” of sperm production.
The article uses the fact that lots of men are willing to use condoms and have vasectomies as evidence that men will be willing to take this pill. I don’t think a willingness to use a barrier method will translate into a willingness to use a hormonal method of birth control, but I do think there’s a market for this pill – probably older (by which I mean more mature, more responsible, and less threatened by the idea of decreased sperm levels) men. I’m sure there are less popular birth control methods on the market right now, and the more options the better.
This video from CNN also hits some more important points: up to 98% effectiveness, 3 months to be effective and 3 months to become fertile again, positive side effects. I know we’ve been hearing about a male birth control pill for a long time, and that’s because it’s been in development for a long time, but I can’t help but think that if it’s on CNN, it must be legit. I’ve heard things from this year to three years from now about when this pill will be available to the public, but whenever it is, it’s soon. Great, especially for couples that don’t want to use barrier methods and women who don’t like what the pill does to them.
On an unrelated note, I wanted to point out this article about how the (female) birth control pill can help women who are undergoing in-vitro and their doctors to better schedule IVF treatments – because the pill regulates a woman’s cycles, which are naturally unpredictable. Interesting.
You think you have been waiting a long time, I bought my first Male Birth Control Pill related domain name probably 8-9 years ago because it would be available “within 5 years”. I’ve continued to add to my domains with Patches, Injections and Implants as these are also discussed as possible forms this tool with take. I hope it is on the market “with 5 years”! You can see all of the hopeful names I have bought so far at the URL I listed. Ken

Hey, Ken, thanks for reading and I commend you on being such an early domain squatter. Hopefully you’ll make a return on your investment soon.
Actually, my goal is to have links to drug stores and make what they call Pay Per Click income. Its pennies per click but goal is to make it in quantity of clicks.
I think dudes will take the birth control pill. Doesn’t the lady pill increase estrogen levels? And does that mean the male pill will make us extra manly? I hope so!
